Registering a nameserver with GoDaddy

This article is for users who have registered a domain using GoDaddy and wish to create custom nameservers under that domain.  For example, if you registered a domain such as mydomain.com, these steps will allow you to register ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com and use those in place of the standard EcoSnap nameservers for ANY domain hosted with EcoSnap.

  • Pull up www.GoDaddy.com in your web browser and log into your account.

  • Once you have logged into your GoDaddy account, select "Domain Manager" which is under the "My Products" / "Domains" section of the menu on the left side of the page.

  • Once you're in the Domain Manager view, click the domain for which you wish to create nameservers. That will take you to the Domain Details page.

  • Find the box labeled "Host Summary" and click the link to "add". You may need to scroll down to reveal this box.

  • Enter the host name of your first nameserver in the entry box labeled "Host name". The most common name is "ns1".  The field is not case sensitive so it does not matter if you use all lower or upper case.

  • Below that, enter the IP address of the nameserver in the first entry box, and create the nameserver by clicking "OK" or "Submit". (Note: Even though GoDaddy provides multiple entry boxes, you will only enter one IP address per nameserver.  Leave the remaining entries blank)

  • Repeat the previous three steps to create a second nameserver. The second nameserver is most often named "ns2", but you may follow any naming convention you find appropriate.  Domain registrars require that every domain have at least two name servers listed, which is why you need this second host entry.

  • The IP addresses for ns1 and ns2 will have been provided in your initial account information "welcome letter."  If you no longer have that email, or did not receive name server information, contact us for the correct IP address information.
  • That's all!  Remember that your changes may take up to 48 hours to fully propagate
